I grew up around a kitchen table where national events were constantly on the menu. From the Kennedy/Nixon debate to "what do women want?", my parents chewed the post-WWII scenery, never letting their six kids forget for a moment that this is OUR country and our stake in it is big. I have since learned that my maternal grandfather read The Nation, as my mother did until well into her 90s, as I do still. But my path to writing has been a long and jagged one. I have been a Head Start teacher, a community organizer, a word processor, copy editor, graphic designer, desktop publisher, database developer, day care owner, office manager, yoga instructor, antique dealer. Add to these gardener, world traveler, portrait painter, clarinet player and singer/actor. I started writing childrens' stories in my 30s (a fool for rhyme). Wrote a weekly newsletter for day care clients for 8 years. Started a novel (I will finish it, I will!!) Wrote a full nonfiction manuscript about child development, still need to rewrite that. Wrote for a daily newspaper: local news, features, and a weekly column. (Mad-) dashed off a musical (The Rich Man and The Shoemaker), and won second place (out of 63) in a play writing festival (wahoo! Somebody thinks I can write!). Self-published 9 short stories about growing up on a horse farm in the '60s. Have published a dozen or so articles in trade journals. In 2011 my one-act play, "Life is Shortz" was produced, with its namesake, Will Shortz, in attendance (in Hornell!!). Result of that: Will asked me to take the play to the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in Brooklyn, which we did, of course. Same play was selected for the High Country International New Plays Festival in Beaufort, SC. I'm now working on another musical. Guess this makes me the world's latest bloomin' baby boomer, but it ain't over 'til it's over.
